Phoenix Family Birth was born in 2015 to proud parents, Mark & Bethany Sawhill.
Prior to the agency opening, Bethany had worked as a high-achieving elementary school teacher and solo doula, while Mark was managing a college bookstore and writing inclusive childbirth education curriculum. They knew from personal experience that there was a huge disconnect between what families really needed and what resources were available in the Phoenix Metro Area (Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Ahwatukee, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Glendale, Peoria, etc.) and they set out to create a company that was different than anything else in existence in the Valley.
Phoenix Family Birth grew rapidly to meet the demands of families in new ways. Affiliate birth doulas were hand selected to join the team. Initially, PFB was the only place in Arizona that you could find teams of two birth doulas. This innovation meant that families had a 24/7 guarantee of support at any point in their pregnancy (no waiting until a certain number of weeks for your doula to be on call) and minimized the "backup doula" concept of a stranger filling in if someone's doula was unavailable. Families were also offered totally agenda-free birth classes that were a good fit no matter what type of birth was anticipated or desired.
Soon they added postpartum doula care with a team model for consistency, and in-home placenta encapsulation to ensure the highest standards of safety. Mark & Bethany developed a curriculum for interactive infant feeding and newborn care classes. Not long after, sleep training became a key pillar of care. Private consulting was offered on a variety of topics related to pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and parenting.
Phoenix Family Birth had become the Valley leaders in doula support and family care during pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and the infant year. Their attention to detail, exceptional professionalism, and insistence on truly nonjudgmental support for every family member meant that doula care, which was once reserved strictly for the "alternative" family, was available to every kind of family.
Today, PFB is proud to remain home to the best doulas in Phoenix. Bethany has taken over sole ownership of Phoenix Family Birth; she continues to provide services directly to clients and functions as the Family Care Coordinator (which is like a fancy term for matchmaking clients to their perfect doula). Mark has returned to school full-time to pursue a new degree.
Through every time of growth, their mission shines on: Phoenix Family Birth works with growing families to offer the most powerful tools a new parent needs: Support, Solutions, and Sleep. They exist to partner with people that know that being an amazing parent doesn't have to mean martyring oneself to parenthood, and that caring for one's own complex physical, mental, and emotional needs is as equally essential as caring for their baby. PFB builds relationships with families based on affirmation, validations, unbiased education, and agenda-free support.

Seeing what they have to say about our exceptional care is the perfect way to get more information about Phoenix Family Birth and what you can expect when you hire us:
It was a wonderful experience beginning to end. I especially appreciated the flexibility when baby arrived 3 weeks early. Every interaction was professional, courteous, and warm. All my questions were answered and I felt very comfortable throughout the entire process.
Nicole and Lisa both texted me throughout my pregnancy to wish me happy mother's day, check in on my health, and just to say hello. The two of them visited my home twice and, within minutes of meeting both of them, I felt comfortable in knowing that I was in good hands. I hoped to have a natural birth, and both doulas were extremely supportive of that decision. They asked great questions, and emphasized that they were here to make us feel comfortable, supported, and informed throughout the birthing process. After meeting Lisa and Nicole, I felt like I had just met two friends who I would know for the rest of my life.
Absolutely beyond my expectations. Irreplaceable. I would have been lost without her physical and emotional support.
She was a perfect fit for our family. Not only was she caring but she was extremely positive when we were faced with any kind of challenge. We knew we could and still can count on her for any type of support whether it's her coming to the house to help with the baby or just a few words of encouragement via phone call.
It was a wonderful experience. I felt listened to, cared for, and respected. It was a relief to have someone with experience to run ideas by or brainstorm, and I had complete trust in her ability to care for my children while I was resting or taking care of myself.
Postpartum doula services benefited our family greatly. Our doula was very helpful and supportive during her time with us and helped make the transition from 2 kiddos to 3 that much easier.
Lisa was positive and supportive. She was very attentive and knowledgeable. She brightened up our days.
Our doulas were not only knowledgeable and a great resource for newborn care, they also navigated the social cues, nuance, and discretion of a complicated household masterfully.
I considered looking for a doula and decided against it because it was my impression that doulas were only for those who wished to have an overly natural or non mainstream experience. Through Phoenix Family Birth, I was introduced to a different kind of doula. One who does not push an agenda and whose only goal is to support the new parent and baby through a very anxiety-ridden time.
My doula knew exactly what to do and the kind of support I needed the entire time. I loved having someone who cared and understood everything I was concerned about in my my birthing journey. She helped me develop a birthing plan that addressed all of my concerns, as well as aspects I had never thought of. I loved her approach in giving me the information I needed to be educated, and allowing me to decide what I felt to be best for my family.
Our labor doula was there with the most amazing feeling of comfort for anyone that was there. She was always informing the family about what was happening.
I didn’t even know about some of the choices we needed to think about, so it was helpful that Phoenix Family Birth gave us information during class and resources to look up at home too. It took the pressure off.
She was amazing. I will always be grateful for her calm, loving presence at my daughter's birth.
During my labor she calmly spoke with me, listened and encouraged me when it didn't seem like I was progressing that it didn't mean my contractions weren't productive. She also was a key in helping me continue to breath through pushing as she gave me the REASON why I should focus on that!
Bethany was a godsend to me with my third child. I could always call on her for guidance with breastfeeding issues and concerns. She always offered support and was so encouraging. Not only would she offer her thoughts but she would provide additional resources for me explore.
When my baby was just five weeks old and I was struggling to breast feed, Bethany was enormously supportive both in offering tangible strategies and expert feedback, and also in being exactly the person I needed her to be. Bethany emanated a non-judgmental calmness every time I spoke with her, even extending her generous spirit to those she didn't know (including the various medical professionals I was frustrated with).
I was so lucky to find someone who encompasses the whole package of birth support!
When I went into labor, it progressed amazingly quickly. My doula was an amazing pillar of strength and calm when I needed it most. She jumped right in applying counter pressure to my lower back, no questions asked. She was able to suss out exactly what I needed when I was unable to explain to anyone there what that was.
She was able to direct me to all the research so that I could make a highly informed decision in whatever I chose. As this was my first birth, she walked me through writing a birth plan and truly weighing and thinking through which options and practices I did or did not want. Right from the start, she knew I was a person who likes to read everything I can about a subject before making a decision and she has access to so many great evidence based resources that help cut through the mountain of opinions that exist on the web. I truly believe I would not have had the exact birth birth experience I wanted with out her wealth of knowledge and calm guidance.
Most people don't think about doulas for a c-section but having been through a natural birth with my oldest, this was a whole new ball game for my husband and I and there was a lot to consider. I was glad to have Bethany's guidance. She brought things to our attention we were not aware of to consider. Our hospital made an exception to allow her and my husband in the OR with me and it really allowed my husband to stay focused on me and the baby while Bethany knew of our plans to have a Family Centered C-section and was able to make sure our wishes were honored. I was able to have a beautiful c-section because of the plans she helped us set up ahead of time.
As a VBAC hopeful pregnant woman, I knew the support and education of a doula would be crucial in having the birth experience I desired. Bethany was intelligent, well prepared, and thorough. What I appreciate most about Bethany is her flexibility, and willingness to listen. She was supportive of all the choices my husband and I made, and was patient and thoughtful as we discussed many subjects, including the plan for labor, postpartum care, etc.
